How Much is Indoor Skydiving?

Indoor Skydiving

It’s a totally normal question, and we get it all the time when we invite people to come around and play in the wind tunnel with us.

“So…how much is indoor skydiving?”

Our favorite way to answer:

“How much what is it?”

Because you see, tunnel flying is a big, beautiful, complicated beast that deserves to be approached from a number of different angles. Otherwise, none of the individual elements make much sense. Come with us, then, brave reader, as we look at how much of everything it is to fly in the “indoor skydiving” wind tunnel.

How Much Time Is Indoor Skydiving?

When we fly in the tunnel, we do it by the minute. We work in very short rotations, stop and rest, then go in again. There’s a timer on the wall that counts it down. That sounds tiny, doesn’t it? Actually, once you’re in there, you’ll realize how not-tiny it actually is, because…

How Much Work Is Indoor Skydiving?

Indoor skydiving is a lot of work. Those introductory two minutes may not sound like much, but in fact, it’s a heck of a lot more physically fatiguing than you might think.

When this author started flying seriously, for instance, I couldn’t stay in there for a rotation of more than a minute. My daily fifteen minutes ran me absolutely ragged. As all things sport, I’ve gotten much stronger with time (and learned not to fight the wind so much), but make no mistake: tunnel flying is aerobic and acrobatic, and requires a surprising amount of flexibility, strength, endurance and mental focus. It will get you fit like crazy. …and, believe me, for all that, it is wildly rewarding. The more you fly, the better you get at it–which is addictive, which means you’ll want to fly more. And, when you fly a lot, another thing can happen…

How Much Glory is Indoor Skydiving?

Ooh, this is a fun one. Perhaps you don’t know this, but indoor skydiving is very much a sport in its own right, sharing less and less with sky-skydiving as each year passes. The Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), the French oversight body that administers airsports competitions, held its first World Cup of Indoor Skydiving in 2014, giving the tunnel its own special place in the annals of airsports–and the competitions just keep getting more amazing. Don’t believe me? Just check this out. Indoor skydiving is a lot of glory if you have your sights set at the top of the podium.

How Much Fun Is Indoor Skydiving?

Indoor skydiving is fun enough to build your entire life around. Literally. Lots of people have–and do. It’s dance and acrobatics and gymnastics and high-precision maneuvers and high-fives and, for heavens’ sakes, flying. There’s absolutely nothing like it in this world. Kids can–and do–enjoy it to the fullest. So can Grandma. So, absolutely, can you.
